The sign in process is definitely broken as of Andrew's software upgrade.
- 2004-08-29 - Ever practical, Donna is working around the annoying sign in problem by simply never siging out. I'm not sure if this is a situation specific solution that works for her since she always uses the same computer. I'm also not sure what happens if one trieds to sign in twice. Time for a test.
When I first connect one of a number of random events is likely (perhaps depending on the state of my cache)...
- I may connect appear to be Signed In directly, courtesy of the cookies?
- I may appear to be viewing an Old version of the page.
- ...
Subsequently...
- The 'Authenticated as ...' message may disappear at a time when I change pages. If I do not notice this, I can still post, but as an IP Address, not as a User.
This should be tested further to see if Content is actually saved in these cases since there have been complaints about lost content, but I have not personnally assured myself that the people complaining are not just getting confused enough by all of this that they are not making mistakes too.
A recent Email (HwoWikiBugs) by Andrew suggests that this may be because of some kind of mis-match between the PhpWiki software and the database.
Obviously, its too late to fall back to a backup of the system before the upgrade. Ideally, this should have been possible, since good practice would be to:
make a complete backup of the PhpWiki progran, and the database software and the content.
DUMP the Content separately,
(perhaps) install the new software, with the old database; then DEFINITELY test!
040822: The sympotoms either hae a more subtle expalnation, or perhaps that is some aspect of the cookies that is persistent by IP address. I am ponderin gthis because I did not have to sign in at all today and one possible explanation is that I did not change sites (IP addresses) between sessions.
This material will stay in PushDown sequence until I refactor it into a proper summary.
040820: I believe that I noticed an emerging pattern to this sign in problem today. The first access showed me as being signed in (which I am assuming is a cookie effect). As I moved around a few pages, I remained Singned In. After doing an Edit and then Saving, I seem to have lost the Signed In status.
I'll test this further to confirm it.
By the way, there are complaints starting to appear at Wards Wiki that the source forge team developing this system seems to be having trouble, based on recent attempts to install various versions.
Other items that still require additional documentation...
- There is now a frequent occurance of "You are viewing an old version of this page."
